HVTZ // THE STORY

The Story

HVTZ was built because of Steve's lived experience. As a father who loves gaming and creating, he knows what it means to keep going through serious, unpredictable illness. HVTZ brings people together to build a gaming and creative community from that shared determination. The Total Veg is its mascot and on-screen personality.

01 // THE MEDICAL REALITY

Diagnosis Doesn't Define

In Steve's words:

These are my redacted DS1500 and SR1 reports. My doctors completed them to support claims under the UK's Special Rules for End of Life. They record the conditions I live with and the severity I face every day.

DS1500 and SR1 are medical evidence reports used for claims under the UK Special Rules for End of Life. The SR1 replaced the DS1500. These forms show Steve's circumstances; they do not give anyone a certain date. Read the DWP guidance.

02 // THE REALITY

The Reality

Steve lives with hypereosinophilic syndrome, autoimmune liver disease, Crohn’s disease, fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. His medical reports record a progressive blood condition. Hypereosinophilic syndrome is systemic: it can affect organs and the nervous system. For Steve, the combined illness reaches his muscles, nerves, joints and bones as well as his internal organs. He experiences jaundice, severe pain and paralysis, and he needs hospital care.

The hospital-bed photograph shows the paralysis Steve lives with. Fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis can leave him wheelchair-bound. His body can take away movement, independence and ordinary time with his daughter without warning. This reality helped give HVTZ its purpose: a place where people can build something together even when life is unpredictable.

Steve cannot control flare-ups by willpower. He cannot choose when they happen or simply make them stop. At their worst, they can kill him. The illness is ongoing; it does not disappear when a flare settles. That uncertainty reaches into every part of his life: whether he can work, travel, plan ahead or be present for the people he loves.

Steve's doctors completed DS1500 and SR1 reports to support claims under the UK’s Special Rules for End of Life. Those reports contain his recorded diagnoses and show the seriousness doctors recognise in his condition. They do not give anyone a certain date or define what the HVTZ community can build together.
